Carnuel Road Parade and Fiesta ‘09

The 4th annual Carnuel Road Parade & Fiesta took place on Saturday, September 19th. See pictures from the event on our Facebook page (you do not have to log in to view pictures). Neighborhood groups, car clubs, youth performances, non-profits and arts & crafts vendors were  out in force for this celebration of local pride and heritage.  Free performances, music, games, and art-making made this a great activity for the whole family.

The Carnuel Road Parade and Fiesta is organized in partnership with the Sawmill Community Land Trust, Wells Park Neighborhood Association, Sawmill Area Neighborhood Association, the Sawmill Advisory Council, and the Arbdera de Vida Association. A direct outgrowth of the Sawmill/Wells Park Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Plan, it focuses on social development in the Sawmill and Wells Park neighborhoods. The Harwood is a proud participant in this annual local event.

The annual Carnuel Road Parade and Fiesta is held the last Saturday of September along Mountain Road at the northern edge of downtown Albuquerque. The event is an outgrowth of the Sawmill/Wells Park Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA) Plan in which local residents expressed the desire for an annual event celebrating the area’s rich history and cultural diversity. The event also seeks to build community and spreads the word about life-long learning opportunities and social resources. The Carnuel Road Parade & Fiesta is at once a neighborhood celebration and community development initiative planned by the Education Committee for the Sawmill/Wells Park MRA and managed by the Harwood Art Center.

The parade features many local groups, from school children and neighborhood artists, to area institutions and the fire department. Those attending the parade are likely to see art cars, vintage cars and low riders along with performance groups, local organizations, community associations, and individual residents. Floats, banners and costumes reflect the heritage, culture and identity of the Sawmill/Wells Park neighborhoods.

The fiesta that follows the parade features music, dancing, entertainment, food, arts & crafts vendors and community organizations. The fiesta seeks to build community by bringing residents together to celebrate. It also strives to build local capacity by bringing organizations into direct contact with the populations they wish to serve.
