Fabric and Yarn Dyeing
Maude Andrade
Have you been searching for a specific color of yarn or need a fabric in just the right shade for a project but can’t find it in your local store? This class will teach you a systematic method for dyeing various fibers in a multitude of colors. We will work with a professional grade fiber reactive dye called Cibacron F (also Sabracon F), which is highly versatile for dyeing cotton, silk, rayon, linen, bamboo, Tencel, and wool. Working from three primary colors we will make a complete color sample set of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors to be used as a starting place for your dyeing projects. In class we will cover the dye chemistry for working with various fibers and safe working practices.
Once students learn the basic chemistry of this dye series, they will have the knowledge to adapt dye recipes for immersion dying, painting with dyes, and creating special effects with dye. Class materials will include handouts outlining dye recipes, directions, and resources for purchasing dyes, auxiliary chemicals, and fabrics. A Niosh approved airborne particle/organic vapor respirator is required for this class.
