Harwood Art Center is accepting applications to our paid summer apprenticeship for Art & Social Justice. Apprentices work under the mentorship of professional artists, designers, architects, engineers and fabricators to create community-driven public artworks. The goal of our shared work is to promote intersectional justice through art and advocacy.
POSITION SUMMARY
Apprentices will work with program Lead Apprentices, Lead Artists, Harwood staff, and community partners to design, fabricate and install a public sculpture at Mesa Verde Park in the International District of Albuquerque. Apprentices will interview Mesa Verde residents to record and edit stories in multiple languages; they will learn to program software for plasma cutting sheet steel; they will work with the City Forester to choose and plant flowering shrubs and plants integrated with public artworks; they will create, paint and install steel butterflies at public artwork sites.
REQUIREMENTS & PREFERENCES
*Applicants must be 16 – 24 years old.*
Applicants should demonstrate strong teamwork, a proven work ethic, creative thinking, experience in art, and communication skills. Experience in sculpture, architecture, design, or engineering are a plus!
Bilingual applicants are strongly encouraged.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
Apprentices will work from May 31 – August 14. Work hours are Monday-Thursday from 9:00am – 4:00pm with an hour lunch break. Apprentices MUST be available for the entire summer program. *There will be no work the week of July 4th*
In 2021, Apprentices will start at a rate of $15 an hour. Apprentices are hired in partnership with New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps as Corps members and the apprenticeship must be your sole employment this summer.
Applications are due by SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2021.
This is a competitive application process. After reviewing the written applications, qualified applicants will be invited for an interview during the first week of March. Following the interview process, we will select a final group to hire for the summer 2021 apprenticeship. We will hire a group of apprentices that represent diversity in skills, experiences, identities and viewpoints.
