Class Descriptions

The below classes are from 2023.

Session 1: June 5 – 16

Red Group (Grades 1-2)

Let’s Make a Play with Stephen Armijo

This class will be a small intro to the works of theatre. Students will use their imaginations to help create a play of their own that the whole family can enjoy.

 

Project Pets with Sara Beacher

In this class, kids will create their creature/pet out of clay. Once they have made their pet, they can make their pet a home out of recycled materials.

 

Gel Plate Printing with Nino Lucci

This is a fun and easy introduction to printmaking. In this class, we will play with a variety of techniques to explore the possibilities gel plate printmaking has to offer. By mixing colors, crafting stamps, and designing stencils, we will learn different methods to combine and create imaginative works of art.

Dance for the Screen with Julianna Massa

In this class, students will develop their own choreography and use technology to create and edit their own dance films.

Mastering the Basics / Painting & Drawing with Michael Certo

The students will practice drawing from three-dimensional models, mark-making, shading, and expression. The class will learn the fundamental techniques of drawing and painting using a variety of media.

 

Ceramics with Lana Scholtz

In this class, we will explore different ways to create with clay! Using different methods and tools, we will create all kinds of textures and building-techniques. We’ll learn about the ‘firing’ process and learn to glaze our pieces, transforming wet clay into shiny, glossy colorful works of art!

Yellow Group (Grades 2-3)

Fabulous Fiber Fun! with Harley Kirshner

In this class students will create fabulous and useful fiber crafts including basket weaving from found objects, a felt stuffy and wearable wearable works of art for themselves and/ or their stuffy!

What Would You Say From Inside a Yucca with Rica Maestas

Participants in this class will collaborate with art & social justice artist in residence, Rica Maestas to create two large, interactive yucca sculptures for display at Harwood in September. Students will learn about local ecology, wheat pasting, adobe plastering, using recycled materials in new ways, and how art can be a way to channel difficult emotions.

Ceramics with Lana Scholtz

In this class, we will explore different ways to create with clay! Using different methods and tools, we will create all kinds of textures and building-techniques. We’ll learn about the ‘firing’ process and learn to glaze our pieces, transforming wet clay into shiny, glossy colorful works of art!

 

Painting Outside the Box with Michael Certo

What is a good painting? How can an ugly painting teach you more? We will look at the formal elements of painting: composition, line, color, and brushwork to explore conventions of art making. We will also break the rules to see what amazing surprises can teach us.

Green Group (Grades 4-5)

Printmaking Power with Jacob Gutierrez

In this class we will explore those techniques that many of us can do right at home. Printmaking is fun and most techniques don’t require special tools. We’ll explore the different methods like monoprinting, collagraphs, and relief printing. We’ll learn to hand print and use and combine all of these techniques to create wonderful works of art.

Comics with Rebecca Cook

In this class, we will explore telling stories through image. We’ll experiment with creative writing, illustration, composition, and color theory to develop expressive comics based on personal narratives.

Creative Concrete Creations with Harley Kirshner

In this class students will learn how to sculpt with wet concrete, from jewelry and magnets to small garden pots and decorations. We will experiment with solid molds from items found in the recycling bin as well as fabric such as old towels and pantyhose!

Ukulele Songwriting with Cecelia Mastripolito

We will learn the basics of playing ukulele – no prior instrument experience required! We’ll learn about how lyrics, melody, and chords come together to create catchy pop songs. Finally, we will use music theory to write our own songs and tell our stories through music.

Blue Group (Grades 6-9)

In this class, we will explore telling stories through image. We’ll experiment with creative writing, illustration, composition, and color theory to develop expressive comics based on personal narratives.

 

DIY Printmaking with Jacob Gutierrez

There are many ways we can do printmaking and in this class we will explore those techniques that many of us can do right at home. We’ll explore the different methods like monoprinting, collagraphs, and relief printing with linoleum. We’ll use and combine all of these techniques to create wonderful works of art.

Ukulele Songwriting with Cecelia Mastripolito

We will learn the basics of playing ukulele – no prior instrument experience required! We’ll learn about how lyrics, melody, and chords come together to create catchy pop songs. Finally, we will use music theory to write our own songs and tell our stories through music.

 

Marvelous Mixed Media Mosaics with Harley Kirshner

In this class students will use a wide variety of found objects including bottle caps, CDs, and dishes as well as glass tiles and beads to create 2 and 3 dimensional sculptures.

Session 2: June 20 – June 30

Red Group (Grades 1-2)

Creative Hands-on Various forms of Weaving with Pearl Sunrise

Each Child will explore and create with weaving beginning with simple forms of Osage Finger Weaving and several forms of Tapestry Weaving and ultimately incorporating the woven project pieces into fun and functional pieces.

 

Puppets! with Lindsay Brenner

In this class we will explore puppet making!

 

Music Adventures with Ceceila Mastripolito

Sing, dance, and learn about music through fun and silly games! We will learn basic elements of music like how to use our singing voices, how to perform rhythm through movement and body percussion, and we’ll pick a song to perform together as a class.

Students will play word games and create poetry inspired by their emotional experiences in the world.

Explore the many ways to make prints in this exciting class! Participants will explore printing techniques while gaining an appreciation for our beautiful interconnected ecologies through the use of plant materials alongside traditional printmaking techniques from around the world. Relief printing, cyanotype, monotype, and more will be explored.

Storytelling with Stephen Armijo

Students will sit around a “campfire” and work on the ancient art of Storytelling. Whether it’s recounting your day at the kitchen table or telling a not so spooky story on a dark and story night, we will celebrate the power of the tale to ignite our imaginations.

 

Natural Dyes with Marissa Mora

Students will explore techniques of dyeing natural fabrics with dyes made from plants and other nature-based sources. We will also experiment with how heat, time, ratios and chemical reactions play a part in the dyeing process. This “STEAM”-based class examines how Art, Science and Math concepts intersect in the creation of a visual project.

Cyanotypes with Sophie Hecht

In this class we will be learning the magical art of cyanotypes on t-shirts, paper, and other fabrics. Cyanotype is an exciting alternative to photography that uses the light of the sun to get results in seconds. The paper magically turns into a rich royal blue color with a white imprint of objects that have been placed on top of the paper. Students can use household items, stencils, and photographs to create interesting shapes on their material of choice. The class will also culminate in a group project of the students’ choosing after experimenting with various techniques.

Recycled Sculpture with Rose-Marie Prins

First, we’ll talk about the importance of recycling as a part of taking care of our planet. Then we’ll choose recycled objects from bins. These will be taped and glued together to form a cool piece of sculpture. This may be an animal, or a spaceship, or a person or a car or train (pictured below), or
whatever you choose. Everything will be made using recyclables, then painted.

Zine Making / Photography with Sofie Hecht

If you want to learn to tell visual stories through zine-making, bookmaking or photography, this class is for you! We will be learning how to take family photos that you love and turn them into a mini book, how to sew your own storybook, how to make a book from your drawings or collages, and how to take pictures! We will learn techniques you can do at home with 1 sheet of paper as well as more complicated processes to create amazing zines and photographs.

 

Session 3: July 5 – 14

Red Group (Grades 1-3)

Puppet Making with Rebecca Cook

In this class, we will explore the exciting world of creating puppets. We’ll develop characters, use mixed media techniques to bring them to life, and perform with our new friends together in a final performance.

 

Filling Up a Sketchbook with Sara Beacher

Mixed media class focused on sketchbooks. In this class, we will book bind our own sketchbooks and have the students fill them with fun projects using different mediums (paint, markers, colored pencils, found objects).

 

Dance for the Screen with Julianna Massa

In this class, students will develop their own choreography and use technology to create and edit their own dance films.

This sculpture course will explore the theme of embracing fear. Campers will nurture the strange by creating their own monster. Over the course of our 2 weeks together we will develop a concept and transform a small model of that idea into a larger project.

Direct Expression with Michael Certo

How can we express ourselves through paint? Using mixed media and certain painting techniques students will learn to convey emotions through line, composition and color.

Yellow Group (Grades 3-5)

Students will learn the basics of improv in order to be able to create and act out a scene on the spot. We’ll spend each day warming, doing a practice exercise, and playing a variety of games.

In this painting class, we will be learning the basics of acrylic and pour painting! We will get to experiment with acrylic as the main medium, plus learning how to mix colors, paint still-lifes through abstraction and surrealism. And optionally, exploring with collage and other materials that can be used in our paintings.

Mixed Media Abstraction with Michael Certo

We will explore the language of non-objective painting. Texture, surface, and composition are elements we can use to create abstract paintings. The students will refine their expression in the realm of abstraction.

Sketchbooks with Jazmyn Crosby

This class will help students develop a sketchbook practice. We will explore different sites on Harwood’s campus and make location specific drawings. Students will grow their drawing skills and develop their unique voice as we investigate a range of approaches for making drawings.

Students will learn about New Mexican folklore and tall tales. Students will use the power of theatre to showcase the stories that make the Land of Enchantment so enchanting.

 

Creative Hands-on Various forms of Weaving with Pearl Sunrise

Each Child will explore and create with weaving beginning with simple forms of Osage Finger Weaving and several forms of Tapestry Weaving and ultimately incorporating the woven project pieces into fun and functional pieces.

In this class, we will be exploring techniques using watercolor and acrylic paint. We will learn about color, texture, pattern, and composition as we experiment with painting both real and imaginary subjects.

 

Storytelling with Jazmyn Crosby

The Storytelling class will explore different approaches for how to tell stories. During our two weeks together we will explore alter egos, fictional places, invent tools, and make a time capsule. Students will learn how to communicate by making audio recordings of their stories and creating their own zine.

The class will focus on exploring multiple methods of sculptural expression and constructing 3-D pieces on a small scale. We will explore how structure can triumph over gravity in many forms.

 

Hip Hop 101 with Albert Rosales

I teach the foundations of break dancing and also include stretching tumbling and capoiera, I also teach the history of the dance and we also draw and paint in my class.

Making comics isn’t as easy as it looks! between writers, pencilers, inkers, letterers, publishers… and tons more, there are so many jobs that can be learned. Oh My Comics! Will cover the basics of all of the basis and enrich skills to carry them further in their art journeys in the process!

Short form Improv with Hailey Tolleson

In the this class, we’ll explore the different types of short form improv games and what it takes to put a show together. Students will use their creativity and the skills they learned to turn audience suggestions into magic.

 

Printmaking Power with Jacob Gutierrez

In this class students will learn about their inner actors, playwrights, and directors. Student will play theatre games, do acting exercises, learn about plot structure, and character development. Over the course of our time together we will create a fun and dynamic short play that utilizes all these new skills.

Blue Group (Grades 6-9)

Making comics isn’t as easy as it looks! between writers, pencilers, inkers, letterers, publishers… and tons more, there are so many jobs that can be learned. Oh My Comics! Will cover the basics of all of the basis and enrich skills to carry them further in their art journeys in the process!

 

Form, Structure & Concept with Michael Certo

Students will build ideas in space using a range of sculptural skills and methods.
