What is Shelter?

Harwood’s current Social Practice project is called Shelter and centers ideas of home, safety and survival in response to Albuquerque’s housing crisis. Food, water and shelter are basic needs every one of us shares. We invite people of all viewpoints and experiences to consider housing as a human right while they embellish Tyvek houses with art and poetry. This is an all ages collaborative project and we ask participants to leave their houses with us so they can be included in an installation for an exhibition at Harwood and elsewhere in the community.

How do you participate?

Join us at our annual Encompass celebration on April 12, 2025 from 4:30p – 7:30p

We invite people of all viewpoints and experiences to join us in embellishing Tyvek houses with art and poetry through drawing, painting, printing, and collage. This project is accessible for people of many ages and abilities and often takes under an hour to complete.

Encompass will feature an installation of all the community created houses with an opportunity to create new houses to be added as well.

Our goal is to use Art to raise awareness and support for housing as a human right and to share personal narratives around this basic human need without exploiting the folx most impacted by the current crisis.
