About the Teaching Artist
Kait O’Brien (she/her) is a visual artist and poet based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Working in a variety of mediums and modalities, Kait explores the idea of place, political geography and the subconscious through topographical maps, encaustic and traditional painting techniques, collage, and poetry. Kait has taught workshops and art camps for a wide range of audiences and age groups. Kait enjoys encouraging creativity in a classroom setting and approaches learning and teaching from a gestalt perspective.
Kait works to combine disciplines in an approach that blurs the traditional boundaries of visual and language arts. Using encaustic medium, she creates surreal collages as well as waxed poems that become translucent during the process. She is interested in the tactile quality of encaustic as more than a painting medium. She also works professionally in communications and design.

Class Description
The places we live, work and play in are critical to our experiences. How we perceive space, through visual, oral and kinetic ideas of orientation, is complex and informed by a myriad of social and cultural influences. In this workshop, we will work with the idea of mapping—how abstract representation of space can be a tool for personal growth and social practice. Using multimedia tools, we will create personal visual languages for identifying and relating to place. We will learn about ways of representing space that exist outside of colonial definitions of mapping, as well as look at how mapping can be used for social progress.

Refund Policy
Class Fee refunds will be issued on a case by case basis and requests must be emailed to Ruby (ruby@harwoodartcenter.org) at least one week prior to the start date of the class. The Class Fees will not be refunded if students request to withdraw from the workshop less than one week before the start date of the class or after the class has begun. If the class is cancelled by Harwood Art Center for any reason, the Class Fee will be refunded in full.
