About the Teaching Artist
Jill Gatwood has lived in New Mexico for 45 years. After working for many years as an epidemiologist, in New Mexico and the Caribbean, Jill now works fulltime as a mosaic artist.
I like art that is not just viewed but is participatory: that can be experienced, touched, and that changes with the light and angle. My recent art focus has been in transforming common household items into works of mosaic art that highlight the innate, iconic beauty of their shapes and purpose. Some favorite projects are mailboxes, toasters, and rotary telephones.
I especially love to watch self-proclaimed “non-artists” redefine themselves when they start to work in mosaic. I have been teaching mosaic art classes and workshops in venues around Albuquerque and at my home studio for the last 12 years.
Jill is a longtime member of the Harwood community – in addition to teaching with Harwood’s Art School program, Jill is also a studio artist on our campus.

Covid Policies
- All staff and students must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination to Harwood administration
- Masks must be worn by all people on Harwood’s campus – both indoors and outdoors
- Harwood Art Center shares a campus with Escuela del Sol Montessori School & follows all school-wide health and safety policies.
Class Description
In this class you will learn how to mix thinset mortar and will create your own unique mosaic art piece using Found Objects, which will not require grouting. Bring your own objects: buttons, pebbles, sticks, shells, beads, feathers, etc. to share with the class. An assortment will also be provided by the instructor. After completing our Found Objects piece, other mosaic techniques using thinset mortar will be described and demonstrated. Thinset is the primary adhesive used for outdoor mosaic murals and sculptures.

Where
This Harwood’s Art School class will be held indoors on our campus near downtown Albuquerque in a large open room which will allow for social distancing.
When
This class will be held Saturday, February 26th from 12pm to 2:30pm.
Who
This class is appropriate for ages 16 and up (under 18 requires parent permission).
The class will be limited to a maximum of15 students.
All participants must provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in advance of the class.
What to Bring
- A face mask* – all staff and attendees are required to wear a mask while on campus (indoors and outdoors)
- Found objects to share ( buttons, pebbles, sticks, shells, beads, feathers, etc)
Other materials will be provided by the teaching artist.
* Recent research indicates that, unlike with previous variations of Covid, cloth masks alone are not sufficient for mitigating the spread of Omicron. As such, Escuela del Sol and Harwood Art Center are asking staff to wear either a respirator mask (such as an N-95, KN-95 or equivalent) or a surgical mask paired with a cloth mask. We are recommending the same for you all to help stop the spread of this new variant.
How Much
Harwood is committed to providing accessible classes to our community. All Art School classes this fall will be offered on a sliding scale with subsidized, at cost, and community support options. A $10 materials fee is included in the cost of the class.

Refund Policy
Class Fee refunds will only be issued for cancellations received by email (dani@harwoodartcenter.org) or EventBrite’s refund system at least one week prior to the start date of the class. The Class Fees will not be refunded if students withdraw from the workshop less than one week before the start date of the class or after the class has begun. If the class is cancelled by Harwood Art Center for any reason, the Class Fee will be refunded in full.
