About the Teaching Artist

Kait O’Brien (she/her) is a visual artist and poet based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Working in a variety of mediums and modalities, Kait explores the idea of place, political geography and the subconscious through topographical maps, encaustic and traditional painting techniques, collage, and poetry. Kait has taught workshops and art camps for a wide range of audiences and age groups and enjoys encouraging creativity in a classroom setting, approaching learning and teaching from a gestalt perspective.

Kait works to combine disciplines in an approach that blurs the traditional boundaries of visual and language arts. Using encaustic medium, she creates surreal collages as well as waxed poems that become translucent during the process. She is interested in the tactile quality of encaustic as more than a painting medium. She also works professionally in communications and design.

Class Description

The places we live, work and play in are critical to our experiences. How we perceive space, through visual, oral and kinetic ideas of orientation, is complex and informed by a myriad of social and cultural influences. In this workshop, we will work with the idea of mapping—how abstract representation of space can be a tool for personal growth and social practice. Using multimedia tools, we will create personal visual languages for identifying and relating to place. We will learn about ways of representing space that exist outside of colonial definitions of mapping as well as look at how mapping can be used for social progress.
