Session 1: June 3 – 14

Red Group (Grades 1-2)

Creative Hands-on Various forms of Weaving with Pearl Sunrise

Each Child will explore and create with weaving beginning with simple forms of Osage Finger Weaving and several forms of Tapestry Weaving and ultimately incorporating the woven project pieces into fun and functional pieces.

Creating with Clay with Sara Beacher

In this class, we will learn the basics of working with clay. We will make small hand bowls, cups, and cute creatures.

Exploring the Third Dimension with Michael Certo

In this class students will explore the basic elements of sculpture. We will consider structure, gravity, balance and volume when we playfully create our three-dimensional works of art.

Life Drawing with Michael Certo

In “Life Drawing” students will learn the skills to observe the world around them and translate that world into the two-dimensional realm of drawing. We will begin with “seeing” and develop simple ways to depict three-dimensional objects using, line, shading, composition and cropping.

Green Group (Grades 4-5)

Mythic Theatre with Stephen Armijo

Students will get an intro to theater and learn about famous myths from ancient worlds of yore. From Thor and Loki, Zeus and Hades, to Ra and Seth we will do a survey of myth while acting out the tales. Finally students will create a new myth for today’s world.

Blue Magic with Harley Kirschner

In this class we will be developing photos of our own art and found objects using the ancient sun powered technique of cyanotype. We will use traditional supports such as paper and cloth as well as experiment with wood prints and washable solar inks!

Painting / Drawing with Ephraim Wina

Students shall be guided on the fundamentals of drawing and painting,and to come up with a final painting that will be exhibited at the end of the camp.

 

Mixed Media Sculpture with Nicole Duran

In this class, children will explore the fun possibilities of 3D sculpture using casting materials, acrylics, and many other materials. They will learn different skills, such as sculpting, painting, and collage making.This will be a supportive and joyful process so that students can further develop their unique artistic style. Imaginative play and stories will also be introduced to inspire the children in their creative process.

Blue Group (Grades 6-9)

Lights Camera Darkroom with Delaney Hoffman

In this class, we’ll dip our toes into old-fashioned ways of making pictures in the Harwood darkroom. We’ll use light, paper and film to make unique works of art and will collaborate on one massive still life taken with a 4×5 camera. The techniques learned in this class will turn students into Picture Wizards, allowing them to make amazing images appear with just a few ingredients from the kitchen.

 

Mini Comic Art Class with Ivy Bennet
This curriculum will have a robust emphasis on understanding the history and process of comic making. This course will be accessible to all ages with varying degrees of reading skill level examples catered to each grade taught. Charles Schultz (Peanuts), Ludwig Bemelmans (Madeline), Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), Tove Jansson (Moomin), and Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics) are a handful of sources we will be drawing from. The goal of this course will be for children to go home with collaborative mini comics created by themselves and their classmates. It will be a highly interactive activity that will leave each child with a thorough understanding of drawing, storytelling, reading comics, creating comic formats, and self expression.

Students will sit around a “campfire” and work on the ancient art of Storytelling. Whether it’s recounting your day at the kitchen table or telling a not so spooky story on a dark and story night, we will celebrate the power of Americana stories and the tall tales we tell.

 

Fiber with Sara Asadi

 

Whacky Wild Things Masks with Gracyn Beaurigard

Drawing inspiration from the book Where The Wild Things Are, we will transform ourselves into monsters through the making of our own multimedia masquerade masks and clawed gloves. After we have morphed into our monsters, we will explore world building through the creation if a small book describing and illustrating the creature’s background and favorite things.

3D Art! with Serena Vazquez

By creating layered art we will work from back to front starting by imaging the landscape and environment where our animal will be, then progressively work to the foreground of our images. We will also learn the basics of watercolors while finishing off with a hand-painted shadow box frame!

 

Found Object Sculpture with Michael Certo

In this class we will use many found objects, from nature and discards from the human world and transform them into art. Students will use their imaginations to collage and combine materials into new forms.

Music Adventures with Cecelia Mastripolito

Sing, dance, and learn about music through fun and silly games! We will learn basic elements of music like how to use our singing voices, how to perform rhythm through movement and body percussion, and we’ll choose a song to perform together.

Tall Tale Telling with Stephen Armijo

The Art of Storytelling with Josie Duran  

In this class we will be exploring the use of comic art and the techniques to tell a cohesive story. With the use of traditional drawing techniques we will draft a story with character concept art and each student will complete a page with their own style using paint as a main color form.

Me as a Monster with Gracyn Beauregard

Ask yourself: “what would I look like if I were a monster?” That is the question we will be investigating in this class. Learners will create a stuffed monster version of themselves using various fiber art materials including (but not limited to) felt and Polyfill. Through learning the basics of sewing and stuffing, we will build our monsters and then using upcycled boxes, craft a habitat or cave for them to and their creature friends to live.

 

Music Adventures with Cecelia Mastripolito

Sing, dance, and learn about music through fun and silly games! We will learn basic elements of music like how to use our singing voices, how to perform rhythm through movement and body percussion, and we’ll choose a song to perform together.

 

Mark-making and Form with Michael Certo

Students will experiment with many mark-making methods to develop drawings. We will draw from life, memory and purely from the imagination.

Green Group (Grades 4-5)

Magic of Cyanotypes / Sun Printing with B. Tadeo

Welcome to the exciting world of cyanotypes, where you can create unique and beautiful photographic prints using the power of the sun. We’ll explore different techniques such as drawing, painting, and placing objects on light-sensitive paper and see how your creations magically come to life. Learn how the cyanotype process can create stunning blue tones, creating a truly captivating effect. Join us as we delve into the history of photography and where we don’t need a camera to create a photograph.

Lights, Camera, Action! with Amare Becker

Film and video are mediums that can tell stories, convey emotions, report on events, and much more. In this class, we will explore film’s possibilities and our own relationships with film and video. We’ll learn processes ranging from camera techniques, sound, light, set design, costumes, acting and directing. We will learn how to work with what we have, turning to old smartphones, recycled and found materials, and our imaginations to make our movie magic! Creative writing prompts, drawings, and movement exercises will guide our creation of a collaborative final film.

 

Fun with Fiber with Molly Goehring 

What in the world is “fiber art?” In this class, we will be exploring what it means to be a fiber artist, as well as experimenting with the different techniques used to create unique, textile-based works of art. We will work with yarn, thread, recycled fabric, and more to create one-of-a-kind pieces which will spark our learners’ imaginations and show them the importance of fiber art throughout various cultures. Our class will do individual projects involving batik, creating abstract fiber-forward collages, and, to end the week, creating a large-scale group fiber sculpture.

Recycled Sculpture with Rose-Marie Prins

First, we’ll talk about the importance of recycling as a part of taking care of our planet. Then we’ll choose recycled objects from bins. These will be taped and glued together to form a cool piece of sculpture. This may be an animal, or a spaceship, or a person or a car or train (pictured below), or
whatever you choose. Everything will be made using recyclables, then painted.

Life & Fun & Poetry with Manuel Gonzales

Together we will be exploring feelings through art and poetry. We will create poetry and artwork to be shared and shown. We will play games, color, draw, and write poetry!

 

The Toolbox of Animation with Connor Swayden 

The Toolbox of Animation” In this course, we will be learning the 12 Principles of Animation created by the first animators of Disney, Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas. Every day, we will learn a new principle by observing our surroundings, connecting it to things we enjoy, and practicing it using fundamental shapes. We will also be learning how to imagine space in 3-D, practicing drawing in that space when needed. By the end of the course, we will be using all of these principles to make a short animation and an animation sketchbook, designed and formulated as a class, and present them at the end of the session.

 

Session 3: July 1 – 12

Flip-book Fun with Serena Vazquez

In this class, we will be learning the basics of animation while also creating our own moving story. By sketching our “frames” we create the illusion of movement on several sheets of paper with every pass of our thumb and by the end we will have our own movie that we can take on the go!

 

Ceramic Creations with Ren Bunzel

In this class, our artists in training will explore the world of ceramics! Students will learn how to use slabs, coils, and pinch pot forms to create beautiful works of art! In the second week of classes, students will explore glazing and finishing a ceramic piece of art.

The Inner Bug with Sarah Raupagh

Students will explore mixed media materials to draw, paint, and sculpt interpretations of native New Mexico insect species. Learning through layering, textures, and color students will create a series of research drawings and a self-portrait as a real or made-up species.

Poetry Art with Ivy Bennet

This poetry session will combine art techniques and storytelling to create a curated exploration of word formation for children to develop their creative literacy. The types of poetry that will be taught include acrostic, haikus, tanka, lune, cinquain, diamante, sonnet, ballad stanza, clerihew, and autobiographical poetry. There will be fun formatting and presentation for everything they create in the class. It will involve many forms of art including character development, watercolor, illustration, music listening skills, and lyrical observation/deconstruction. The class itself is flexible to accommodate to the skill set of each individual student.

Yellow Group (Grades 3-5)

Learn to play the ukulele – no prior instrument experience required! We will learn chords and melodies to play and sing along with fun songs. We will learn about rhythm, pitch, and other elements of music through movement and games. Finally, we’ll choose a song to play and sing together.

Students will explore the human experience, a process of understanding feelings and self, through mixed media exploration. Students will learn how to work with a variety of forms, colors, and layers to express themselves.

In this class, we will explore experimental approaches to analog photography. We will learn various processes such as cyanotypes, solargraphy, lumen printing, and other types of experimental techniques. Campers will also get the opportunity to create collaborative and individual works. Let the photo magic begin!

In this class, our learners will brush up on the fundamentals of painting while learning the importance of finding their own creative voice. Working from a mixture of photographs, real life, and imagination, we will explore shape, color theory, and all of the little tips and tricks that painters use to make their work cohesive and visually appealing.

Students will learn about New Mexican folklore and tall tales. Students will use the power of theatre to showcase the stories that make the Land of Enchantment so enchanting.

 

Animal Marionette Making with Sarah Raupagh

Students will explore recycled sculpture through creating animal marionettes. Through the process of found, recycled, and new materials, each student will bring to life a marionette of their own.

In this class, we will use our imaginations to sculpt magical monsters out of different types of clay! We will learn pottery techniques like pinch pots, coil building, and slab building and experiment with surface decoration! After making our ceramic works we will have fun with different types of modeling clay, making friends for our monsters! This will be a fun class full of creativity and silliness that will teach the basics of ceramics!

In this class, we will explore a variety of printmaking techniques to learn about traditional printmaking methods and discover how to create beautiful prints without the need for special tools or a printing press. Throughout the class, we will delve into techniques such as paper marbling, collagraphs, monoprints, and more. With the help of alternative tools like spoons, we will learn how to hand-print and experiment with different techniques to create amazing works of art!

Students will explore painting and drawing through a series of exercises that require full body movement, altered perspectives, and shadow play. Students will learn how to layer the varied exercises together to help develop and expand upon their current skill set.

Experimental Approaches to Photography with B. Tadeo

Get ready to play and experiment! In this class, we will explore what it means to create a photograph without a camera by using light-sensitive photographic materials. Through hands-on experiments and creative exploration, we will discover how everyday objects and household items can be used to create stunning photographic images.

Landscapes + Portraits with Susan Roden

“Our Stories” The class will create a communal story and visually express through a large collaborative acrylic painting. Individually they will paint and collage free-standing characters to create a diorama.

Building in Space with Michael Certo

Students will battle gravity in their attempt to create form and structure in space. There will be failures and successes, but we will learn the limits of sculptural form.

 

From Concept to Cover with Delaney Hoffman

In this class, we’ll learn bookmaking forms ranging from one page zines to ancient Coptic stitches and Japanese stab binding in order to craft a one-of-a-kind publication. Students will leave with several handmade books and learn about the process of sequencing and editing printed editions.
